Known as "The most beautiful island in the Ryukyu island"
Kumejima, often referred to as “Kumi no Shima” (球美の島), meaning “the most beautiful island in the Ryukyu island,” preserves the authentic natural beauty of Okinawa.
Located approximately 100 kilometers west of Naha, this volcanic island offers a diverse landscape that ranges from lush, pine-covered hills to dramatic rock formations like the "Tatami Ishi"—hexagonal volcanic rocks that resemble Japanese traditional woven mats. Unlike the more touristic hubs, Kumejima maintains a serene, unhurried pace, inviting visitors to reconnect with nature through its sprawling sugar cane fields and panoramic viewpoints that overlook the turquoise sea spanning around and far into the horizon.
The island’s crowning glory
The island’s crowning glory is undoubtedly Hatenohama, a breathtaking seven-kilometer-long sandbar consisting of three distinct islets made entirely of white sand. Surrounded by emerald waters and vibrant coral reefs, it is frequently cited as one of the most beautiful spots in all of Japan. Whether you are snorkeling among tropical fish in the shallows or simply walking along the pristine white expanse, the experience of being surrounded by nothing but ocean and sky capture the ethereal essence of the island. Beyond the sandbar, the local beaches like Eef Beach provide a perfect crescent of calm water, ideal for those seeking a quiet retreat.

Legacy of the Ryukyu
Deeply rooted in the legacy of the Ryukyu Kingdom, Kumejima is as much a cultural destination as it is a natural one. The island is famous for its production of Kumejima-tsumugi, a traditional hand-woven silk fabric designated as an Intangible Cultural Property. Visitors can explore the ruins of Uegusuku Castle, the highest fortress in Okinawa, which offers a glimpse into the island's strategic historical importance while providing 360-degree views of the coastline. Complemented by local delicacies like world-class tiger prawns (kuruma-ebi) and premium Awamori, Kumejima provides a holistic Okinawan experience that satisfies the soul, the palate, and the adventurous spirit alike.
